Why I Hate Mission Statements

Here’s a challenge for you aspiring writers out there: try to write a more trite piece of prose than this mission statement that I found in one of our employee manuals:

At TempWorks Software, our mission is simple. We strive to differentiate ourselves in our market by achieving excellence in two areas:
providing an unparalleled product and delivering superior customer service. We are dedicated
to taking advantage of the best technology has to offer, molding that technology to meet the changing needs of the industry we serve, and rendering our product and services with integrity. By implementing this philosophy, we seek to maintain market dominance and become the company by which our competitors are measured.

We recognize that our ability to succeed in our mission starts with our people.
TempWorks policy is to recruit, motivate, and retain the best. Staff are hired for
their skills and experience, competitively compensated for their work, given an
environment that fosters trust and teamwork, and offered professional growth to
match their commitment and ability. The cumulative goal of fulfilling our
partnerships – both internal and external – equals fulfillment of our mission.
