Less than .025% of the world's population does software development as a career.
That's a shame because most software jobs pay better and provide better life balance than most everything else. It's an ideal career for any capable person, particularly young women looking for high pay well and the flexibility to move in and out of full-time work as they start families.
For some it may be a question of how to get started. I've been investigating this a bit for some friends and came across Udacity which offers an affordable flexible and highly rated online software training program.
The astonishing thing is the program has the option of starting even if you have no background in software.
Udacity has many emerging competitors. Khan Academy, Plural Sight, Treehouse, Coursera and more.
If you know someone smart stuck in a dead-end job, pass them the suggestion.
