The One Thing LinkedIn Won’t Get You: a Job

An email inbox flooding service whose sole purpose in life is to remind me that a guy I went to high school with would like me to join LinkedIn so he can spam everyone I’ve ever met.

As reported first here on StaffingTalk, the worse-than-Myspace pathetic spam trap that bombards you with authentic-seeming email solicitations and connections from people you don’t know and don’t want to know, otherwise known as LinkedIn, SUCKS.  It won’t find you talent and, yes thank you Jon Stewart, won’t help you find a job either.

The irony of the video though is that the most damaging part to LinkedIn’s reputation wasn’t Jon Stewart’s scathing criticism – heck all PR is good PR.  Instead it was the lame, false, full-of-himself statements made by LinkedIn’s CEO at the beginning of the town hall clip that make it all too evident that the company is directionless .

No, Linkedin won’t get you a job, You will get You a job. Linkedin is and always has been meant for networking and meeting new people professionally by way of all of the people you have met professionally or worked with previously. Yes, it can be creepy or awkward meeting people actually in person that are at industry events but it is a way to truly link in with someone you have had conversations with online. It allows more opportunity to put yourself out there in front of people. People need to utilize resources rather than rely on them. My problem with Linkedin is that it is flooded with the masses and genuine conversation, real debate on any subject in staffing is rarely achieved.
I’ve been watching this site. I read the article on the new direction. I enjoyed reading many of the previous articles. For me, when it all comes by way of an RSS feed, I pick and choose what I want to read by the headline. Limiting the viewpoint in staffing to the viewpoint of the owner is like seeing staffing with blinders on, tunnel vision. Many staffing owners started from the ground up and weren’t just handed a readymade business but still business owners of any sort benefit from seeing the big picture along with all that it encompasses. I think a healthy mixture of things relevant to both the owner and the recruiter alike would be wonderful. That’s just my opinion though. I will be back tomorrow to look over the news of the day and will continue to see where this site goes.
