The days of 99 weeks of unemployment benefits are numbered. President Obama signed a bill that will extend federal unemployment benefits, which were set to expire at the end of this month, through the end of this year. But the law, combined with falling unemployment rates, will reduce the maximum duration of benefits to 73 weeks from 99 by year’s end. [San Francisco Gate]
Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s plan to spend $5 million to recruit 1,000 out-of-state workers survived a challenge on the floor of the House of Representatives Thursday. Rep. David Lust, R-Rapid City, said a separate bill wasn’t needed because the governor already has authority to enter into contracts such as what he wants to do with recruitment firm Manpower Inc.
