Au Revoir Temp Staffing

Cartoonist Peter Schrank of the Economist gets to the essence of the socialist victory in France today: it’s not fun to pay off one’s debts.  Pierre of France like Willem of Holland behind him want the spending party to go on indefinitely.

And François Hollande, the Socialist president elected today, plans to spend his way to new jobs.  But where will the money come from?    Hard to say, but one answer he has hinted at is to charge temp staffing firms more for employment related taxes.

He especially wants to attack the practice now widespread in France (see chart) of using continuously renewed temp staffing assignments to avoid employment laws intended to protect people with ‘permanent jobs’.

Yes, i could have at least explained the chart. The “1 jour” row has a really big number it means “one day”…

Employers figure “Why deal with these whacko employment laws if i can just hire temp and keep the person coming back on one day assignments.”

I’m not much of a drinker but when i’m in France i tend to hang out a lot in cafes and invariably end up chatting with the guy at the next bar stool and sometimes that person is a temp worker that really likes being a temp worker and picks and chooses days to work.

While i don’t get how they can’t thirst for more or how they can even get by, i do admire their “nothin’ in my pocket” freedom.
