When you’ve worked in the staffing world for as long as I have you realize the hardest job in the industry is the Staffing Specialist. If you’ve never been in this position then you need to spend a day in the life of one. You’ll come out with a whole new appreciation for what they go through on a daily basis.
No two days are ever the same, which can be good and bad. Some days you’ll go home crying.Â
Other days you’re on cloud nine because you either --  a.) won the huge client you’d been after forever or b.) you were able to help someone who had been kicked around one too many times. Someone who just needed someone to give them a chance.
The ultimate is when both happen.
I am a firm believer if you want to move up in the staffing industry you need to work your way through the ranks.
You cannot truly appreciate what you’re asking out of your people until you sit behind that desk and do the following, simultaneously:
- Interview an applicant
- Answer the phones
- Fill an order that’s already past due
- Administer a drug test
- Run a background check
- Have someone yelling at you on the other end of the phone
It takes a special kind of person to handle this job and it’s definitely not for everyone. If you’re a temp agency manager and you’re reading this article – take a minute out of today to tell your staff THANK YOU for all that they do.
Take a second – take a breath – look around – and tell your amazing Staffing Specialists THANK YOU!
