HR “Side Projects” Kill Profitability

Today’s news: Wachovia Bank shutters internal ‘staffing agency’.

Certainly high on the list of moronic HR behaviors is the attempt to be a ‘talent agent’.  Hate to break it to you HR, but I know talent agents, talent agents are good friends of mine, and you are no talent agent.

HR side projects that try to usurp the role of skilled recruiters kill profitability.  I can’t count how many times I’ve seen it happen.

When I first moved to Minnesota in 1980, computer powerhouse CDC, aka Control Data Corporation, had little temporary offices sprinkled all over the south metro area.  I walked into a few and they were always staffed with cute young things (can’t imagine the ego of the guy who put that program together) but there was never much activity.  No surprise that not only did this internal agency fail but CDC – once one of the great computer companies  – lost its focus and went out of business altogether.

No surprise then that today’s temporary staffing headlines feature the closing of failed Wachovia Bank’s internal temporary agency.
