Next week, thousands of staffing industry
pros will don name tags and rub shoulders at ASA Staffing World in National Harbor just outside Washington D.C. But with jam-packed schedules and a maze of an expo hall, it can be difficult to do the thing you want to do: have meaningful conversations with your industry peers.
In fact, it may be easier to network at a “sideline” event that takes place outside the frenetic pace of Staffing World, where no one’s glancing at their watch or rushing off to catch another keynote speaker. Simply put, an informal social get-together at a bar or a restaurant allows weary conference attendees to relax – which is sometimes all it takes to get the real networking flowing.
Susan Wurst, VP of Account Management for TempWorks Software, is a huge advocate of events that take place beyond the vendor hall. “In the many years I have been involved with Staffing Industry trade shows, I have always found the after-hours events an equally valuable aspect of the conference experience,” she says.
But she’s not just an attendee; this year she’s helping host a private party for guests of TempWorks on Tuesday, October 14th at Bobby McKey’s Dueling Piano Bar, which is only a half-block from the Staffing World Venue. They’ve rented out the entire piano bar from 7 to 11 where guests can enjoy free admission to the all-request show, plus complimentary food and drinks.
Wurst says the unique overlap that can occur between prospects and clients has proven to be a useful exchange for everyone involved. Prospects can glean information from current customers in a candid way, and Wurst encourages this because she’s confident in TempWorks’
products and services.
“Any opportunity I have to introduce my customers to our prospects and give them a comfortable forum to have a private in-person conversation is only going to help our sales department secure the credibility they need to close a sale,” she says.
But it’s not just a one-way exchange; Wurst and the rest of the TempWorks team are excited to interact with other vendors to explore beneficial third-party partnerships.
Essential StaffCARE, a major writer of health benefits for the staffing industry, is also hosting a client appreciation event at Pose Ultra Lounge located inside of the Gaylord National Resort. Their guests will have the option to dress as if attending one of Gatsby's epic soirees, or simply come as they are and pick up some of the head-dresses, pearls, fake cigars, and long cigarette holders on the way in. A live 7-piece swing band will provide even more roaring 20's flair.
"This event offers a social interaction between our clients and staff, which continues to prove beneficial to us throughout the year." says Jody Williams, Executive Marketing Coordinator. "It's a chance for everyone to put their phones down, get off of their computers, and develop a more familiar connection with their clients."
