Epic Systems, an employee owned software company based in Madison, WI, has been taking the enterprise software market for hospitals by storm. You can read more about them at HISTALK, one of my favorite blogs and perhaps the most popular blog on the hospital industry itself.
One of the cool things about Epic’s approach to the market is that unlike Cerner and GE and other mega-companies that rely on Big Six consulting to get implementations done, Epic gets customers to take ownership of implementations and they bring in really hard working younger staff that don’t cost a ton and don’t carry the baggage you get with those $400/hr consultants. Epic recruits young graduates from nearby University of Wisconsin (disclosure: one of my clients has been a big provider of candidate profiling tools to Epic), and they’ve created a great thing.
